Breakups are one of the most terrible things about life. Whether your relationship lasted for five years or five months, it's going to hurt horribly. When a break-up gets you down, nothing makes you feel better than junk food, a night with your best friends, and a good movie.
Since movies are the perfect way to escape your awful heartache and live in a world where anything wonderful can happen, I've compiled the 10 best movies to watch when you want to be happy, but your heart is sad.
1. Any Disney Movie
If you want to escape this world where everything is terrible, I recommend a Disney movie because nothing beats a trip to the world of fantasy. However, if it was a tough breakup and you don't think you can handle a film that ends with true love's kiss (which is totally understandable), I suggest you watch "Meet the Robinsons" (my personal go-to after a break-up), "Brave," or "Lilo and Stitch."
2. "The Princess Bride"
You can take all your mind off your breakup and quote this movie instead! Who wouldn't want to escape to another world when your heart is broken? You can immerse yourself in a whole new adventure!
3. "Heathers"
If all the angst in the world were compressed into a movie, it would be found in "Heathers." This movie is the perfect time to vent and let out all your pent-up anger over the person who broke your heart. Just don't go murder-crazy on them, please.
4. "Wonder"
When you go through a breakup, it seems as though every person in the world is the worst person alive. If you need a reminder that not everyone is a terrible human being, I recommend "Wonder." This story is so sweet, you'll be crying happy tears by the end.
5. "The Devil Wears Prada"
This is the best movie for a girls' night. It has one of the best casts of any movie ever, is set in New York and Paris, and features some fantastic throwback fashion. What other movie is going to have some of the sassiest comebacks of all time?
6. "The Pink Panther"
If you're in the mood to laugh until you cry, this is the movie for you. The misadventures of Inspector Clouseau are so ridiculous you'll end the movie with your sides hurting. Plus, Beyoncé is in this movie. Yes, you read that right. And the song she sings in it is actually pretty good.
7. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
This movie is so chill and relaxing. When you want to just stay in with your friends and relax, this is the movie you're looking for. Or if you want inspiration on how to spend a day off running through the city with your friends, this is also the movie you're looking for! Basically, this is a movie for every occasion.
8. "Dirty Dancing"
You should definitely watch this movie seven or eight times a day after a breakup. The music is fantastic, the dancing is beautiful, and absolutely nothing beats Patrick Swayze.
9. "Singin' in the Rain"
Who doesn't like musicals? This timeless classic is one of the most feel-good movies of all time and is guaranteed to put you in a happy mood. The story is so pure and fun, and you'll be humming the songs long after the movie's over.
10. "Legally Blonde"
If you watch only one movie while you're getting over your breakup, please let it be this one. Elle Woods is the most inspirational female character of all time and the perfect example of how you should respond to a breakup. You should live every day showing the world how valuable you can be, and no breakup should ever bring you down!
