Every Girl Dreams About Her Wedding Day... But Not Me

The idea of thinking about my wedding day just isn't exciting.

In books and movies, you hear people talking about how girls often have their weddings planned out from a young age. You can almost picture the movie scene with the little girl running around with a dress-up veil placed sloppily on the top of her head.

A few years ago, I felt as though I was behind in the game of “Plan-Your-Wedding-Day-Before-You-Even-Have-A-Steady-Relationship.” So I decided to create a cliché Pinterest board titled “One Day” and added the most random things (mainly cake because let’s face it, food is better than boys).

That board still sits there to this day and receives the least amount of interaction that one could imagine. I’ll 'pin' a ring here and there, and maybe a dress or two. The idea of thinking about my wedding day just isn’t exciting. I don’t like to think about it, and when I do, I certainly don’t get all giddy like some girls I know.

Why don’t I like it, you ask? Maybe it’s the idea of stressing out so much for what’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life. It could be me rebelling against the social norm that girls are ‘supposed’ to like planning their wedding. Maybe it’s the possibility of not being happy with your partner and not realizing it until you’ve been married for some time.

Or maybe it’s the thought of spending thousands of dollars for one party. I’d honestly rather throw a few kegs in my backyard and call it a day. I’m not 100 percent sure why I never liked pre-planning my imaginary wedding. I just know that I’m totally OK with not being able to relate to someone when they talk about whether they want an ivory wedding gown or a white one (yes, they’re different).

This article was actually inspired by my sister, who recently got engaged about six months ago (congrats Maria & Jon). I realized that I was the girl who doesn’t dream about my wedding day when my sister was talking about all of the details that she had already figured out.

She was talking about vendors and photographers and wedding colors and flowers and was so well organized that I was in pure disbelief. She’s definitely been planning this since she was 13, I thought to myself as I opened up my maid of honor box (I didn’t even know that was a thing until I received one). She has so much planned already, but her list of things to do seems to be getting longer as well.

Part of me envies my sister, along with all of the other girls who have their wedding day planned to perfection in their minds. It’s something that I’ll never be able to enjoy. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not perfectly content with my feelings towards wedding planning.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for my sister; I love tagging along and helping her with the minor details of her wedding. It makes me happy seeing her so ecstatic about something.

By no means am I bashing the girls who enjoy planning their wedding day. I’m just here to share the thoughts from someone who doesn’t think twice about something that people believe girls spend their whole lives looking forward to.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
