For the past few months, my Snapchat feed of stories has all consisted of the same thing: Fortnite. If your feed is anything like mine, you too have experienced the endless stories of 20-year-old boys posting photos of their computer screen with characters running around as the words “#1 Victory Royal” flashes above it. It is the newest obsession.
First comes love, and then comes marriage, then comes Fortnite stealing your man.
Now, we have to give her some credit. It is free. The graphics aren’t sh*t and it is basically an adult version of the Hunger Games, but with guns. So I will give her props on all that. Fortnite, you are pretty dope. You got the graphics. You got the cheap, free download appeal and you know how to have fun. You’re a man’s dream date.
I never understood the fascination about video games. Maybe it is because I never could understand the difference between which buttons did what command, despite lining my computer screen with sticky notes of reminders with what button does which command. Or, the fact that I was always interested in aspects other than winning the game. Despite my neutral relationship with the game, I found myself wrapped up in a polygamous relationship with it. Sharing my life, from my time to dates with it.
To all the ladies who have also been declined a phone call because their man was in the middle of a match or been told, “Yeah, this is my last game.” Then, four hours later, you finally hear from him. Here are five ways to incorporate Fortnite in both of your lives, so you are not left in the dust.
1. Beat him
A little competition is always fun. The game is free online so go ahead, download it and see what all the fuss is about. Wander around the arena admiring the majestic green trees and take advantage of the entire good gear pick up sights you heard him yelling about for the last couple of months. Play the game with him when he is playing and see who can get a higher ranking. Add that competition into your relationship to test who is the ultimate Fornite victor.
2. Teamwork
Be his lookout. Sit next to him when he is playing the game and help him keep a look out for potential shooters. Chances are he will not only appreciate that you are engaging in his new favorite activity with him, but he will be happier having you help him lead him closer to victory.
3. Understand the game
Maybe you are like me and you do not understand the obsession with video games. However, you should think to yourself, does he understand each of your obsessions? Try to take the time to understand what the game is all about. You do not need to like it, but showing him that you are trying to understand an interest of his will show that you care about him.
4. Fortnite 2.0
Go to your local Target and purchase two Nerf guns. Then when you get to his apartment that night, shoot him with one of the plastic darts and yell, “The countdown has started!’. Bring that childhood aspect out of the both of you. Turn his living room and room into the new battle royal and use couch cushions as wood and materials to build forts around yourself. Make the game come to life. If he is still too attached to the online version, at least you now have something to shoot him with to annoy him till he gets off.
5. Become a pro
Have him teach you how to play the game. Not only are you showing interest in one of his favorite activities ( girlfriend points for you ), but you also get the chance to do something other than sit on his couch and wait for him to be done.
