Tinder is a great place to meet singles in your area, and by singles, they mean singles, right? The classic tale of a significant other cheating has recently gotten more complex due to social media becoming wildly popular. It's hard to do anything nowadays without leaving some type of paper, or in this case electronic, trail.
Tinder allows users to like other users in the area in hopes to get liked back so they can message each other. So what do you do when you find your BFF's boyfriend or girlfriend on there?
1. Definitely, don't swipe right
This one seems obvious, right? If you're going to follow the steps below, you don't want to make the situation any more awkward than it already is. The last thing you want is your friend to get the wrong idea that you have the hots for their totally shady boyfriend or girlfriend.
2. Evaluate the situation
Maybe they’re on there for fun or they go on it together as a joke! Then again, maybe not. Take a nice long look at the profile to try and decide what’s really going on here. Just know if they have a bio and their Instagram connected, they’re definitely not on there to mess around. Tinder only allows profiles to circulate 2-3 days from last swipe, so the "it's an old page!" excuse isn't going to work this time.
3. Decide when to tell them
The news has to be broken at some point and if you choose a bad time to tell them, it could make this problem a lot worse than it already is. So yeah, probably not a good idea to tell them about their significant other being a total scumbag if they have a big exam they’re studying for. Also not a great idea to let it sit for a week without saying anything either, so pick a time that feels right.
4. Break the news
This by far is the hardest and most awkward part of this whole fiasco. You've found the evidence, you've decided the behavior is totally shady, and you think now is a good time to tell. Start off by asking about the relationship to ease into it, you don't want to catch them too off-guard. It’s inevitable to have to tell them at this point because if you don’t and they find out later, you’re going to look like the shady one. Now it’s time to drop the bomb. This will probably be super uncomfortable no matter how you do it, so just let it fly.
5. Support them
Whatever they decide to do with this information is their choice and you have to respect that. Even if they decide to stay with the person that was out looking for fresh meat, you still love your friend and want them to be happy.
Now you've done it, (or at least know how to do it).
Online dating can be a fun way for singles to meet other singles, but when these singles become not so single, that’s where the problem lies.
We all want what’s best for our BFFs whether they think so or not. Next time you're swiping away and see their significant other, make sure it doesn't go unspoken because that won’t end well for anyone.
