I've Got A Girl Crush, And Whatever Way I Feel For Women Is Completely OK

Remember that figuring out this "fine line" isn't easy for many people.

It’s been awhile since I wrote “Battling The Sexuality Monster.” A scary article to post, but it was a long time coming. In my life, being confused about my sexuality has felt like a churning sensation, butterflies in the stomach that can’t be explained. Now that I understand my sexuality better, this churning sensation has somehow transferred to my throat.

Being a girl who is shy and not straight often seems like a double whammy, like there are multiple things keeping me at a distance from others. But I’m learning to power through. Slowly but surely.

I was listening to the song “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town. In the song, the woman has a “girl crush” on the girlfriend of the man she wants. Therefore, she wants to be this girl so that she can date this guy.

A girl crush can be defined as “intense and non-sexual.” However, if you listen to the sensual lyrics of the song, one could think that this woman has a crush crush on the other woman. Specifically when she says, “I want to taste her lips, yeah cause they taste like you.” You could argue that this woman is just using the “cause they taste like you” to cover up having feelings for this beautiful woman.

Much like this song, any strong feelings you might have towards another woman are not easy to distinguish between admiration and a romantic crush.

Here are some theories I've come up with on how you can tell the difference:

1. You notice how she looks

Girl Crush: If she’s your best friend, you comment “YOU’RE SO BEAUTIFUL” or “What a babe” on all her Instagram pictures. If she’s someone you barely know, you comment heart-eye emojis on all her pictures, because let’s face it, she’s on fire.

Crush: You look at her, whether it’s at a party or in class, and think, “Couldn’t we just be kissing right now?”

2. You relish being in close proximity to her

Girl Crush: I mean, yes, but really only if you’re just having a great conversation. You’re happy to give her a hug to say hi and bye. Maybe a peck on the lips at a party!

Crush: Oh man. Whether it’s being able to smell her fruity body mist or cuddle, you’re completely present in the moment.

3. You want to be an important part of her life

Girl Crush: You want to be the person she vents to about her crushes. You want to be a shoulder she can count on.

Crush: Even if you just met her, you care about her so much. You don’t know why, but you don’t like the image of her and the guys she talks about. They can’t possibly care about her as much as you do.

4. She gives you the feels

Girl Crush: When she gives you a compliment, or when you have a good conversation.

Crush: As soon as she walks into the room, you have this giddy feeling — even if you’re not looking at her.

5. You daydream about her

Girl Crush: The two of you are at Disneyland, posed with a caption about how you’re like Mike and Sully.

Crush: You’re holding hands, with Paramore’s “Still Into You” playing in the background. You’re picturing kissing in the car and her meeting your family. You can see yourself dating her.

6. You can see yourself dating her

Girl Crush: I mean, you’d joke about dating over social media, but it really would be weird to kiss her. She’s either like a sister to you, or you want her to be like a sister to you.

Crush: I mean...yeah.

Remember that figuring out this "fine line" isn't easy for many people. Try not to let it freak you out. Girls are beautiful and majestic. Whatever you feel for them is completely OK.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
