Marriage Is Not A Piece Of Paper

"If you see marriage as a piece of paper then that's all it will ever be."

When we were kids, we'd dream of who we were going to marry. We imagined what our husbands would be like and how many children we'd have or what house we would live in. We fantasized about our weddings with our friends and wondered what our new last names might be. The one thing we didn't even think about seems to be the only thing marriage is becoming -- a piece of paper.

Marriage is not just a piece of paper. All the piece of paper does is establish legal matters, like finances -- things that are government related. That's not marriage. Marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman under God.

Marriage is the promise you make to your spouse that you will support him/her through whatever triumph hits you. A piece of paper can't make your promise true. A piece of paper can't make you love someone unconditionally. A piece of paper can't make you forgive. A piece of paper can't make you be selfless. Marriage is the happiness you share with the person that you promise to cherish for life, through the dry seasons, through the fights, and through the joys .

I blame a huge portion of divorces on the increasingly popular notion that marriage is only a certificate issued by the state government. If you see marriage as a piece of paper then that's all it will ever be. That's all you'll ever treat it as. It shouldn't be something that you just think, "Oh whatever. I can just do whatever I want and file for divorce if I decide I don't like this person anymore."

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24 ESV)

The state didn't establish marriage. The government does not have that authority. God established marriage in the very beginning of time. It's purely under His discretion. That's why marriage exists. That's where marriage came from.

Not only is the belief that marriage being only a piece of paper wrong, but it's also very selfish. Marriage should be looked at as your commitment to the other person and to God. Your spouse should be wrapped around your finger. The idea of living without that person should make you feel uneasy.

It's important to know that when you make the promise of marriage, it's for life and that it's built off of the relationship you have with God and with the other person. It isn't about yourself or the certificate your state makes you sign.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
