My Breakup Brought My Brother And I Closer Than Ever

To the person who came through for me when I needed them the most.

I always knew my brother would be there for me if I needed him, but there were definitely times I had doubts.

With siblings, you can fight so intensely that it can make you unsure if they have your back or not. Or sometimes, you won’t talk for days. But, then I went through something that clarified once and for all that my brother would absolutely be there for me when I needed it.

I went through a situation that no person should ever have to go through–being ghosted.

It was out of nowhere, completely brutal, and I didn’t know what to do. Between my mom, my dad, and my best friend, I couldn’t relax or calm down. I even tagged along to one of my closest friend’s hair appointments with the girl who does my hair. She gave me space buns, insisting it was the cure for being sad. I was absolutely broken up over this guy, who I hadn't even been seeing long. It was one of those scenarios where I turned a blind eye to any red flag he threw at me, just because I liked him so much.

So, when my brother caught wind of what happened to me, he contacted me and asked me what happened.

I told him, thinking he was going to tell me to get over it or something along those lines. But instead, he comforted me. And then he made me laugh saying that he was going to go egg his car so it freezes to the paint (which he did NOT). Then he asked me for his Instagram. And then his number. At that point, I asked him what he would even say to this guy, whom he had never met before. He sent me something he had written up in his notes on his phone, and by no means did I expect that. It was short and sweet, basically telling the guy to grow some balls and tell me what happened and to never talk to me again after that. I laughed when I read it, because I was picturing my 19-year-old brother sitting in a dorm typing this out. And then I cried, because I realized I had the most amazing brother in the world, who would have my back with no questions asked when I needed him.

Ultimately, I told him don’t text him or send him a DM, because it’s so not worth it.

But just by him talking to me and being there for me, I felt so much better. And although the situation absolutely sucked for me to go through, I learned so much more about the relationship between my brother and me. So in some ways, I’m grateful that I went through all of the pain because my brother had made it almost worth it–which is crazy for me to say. Ever since that day, our bond has never been stronger. We now talk every day, and I love it.

So to my incredible brother: I’m not sure if you’ll ever read this, but thank you for being an amazing brother. I love you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
