Unless you have been living under a rock for the past week, social media has been buzzing with the news of Prince Harry's engagement to actress Meghan Markle.
Literally, every few segments on Facebook right now talk about their wedding plans, how they met, what Prince William and Princess Kate think of Meghan, how Meghan is adapting to life in the UK, etc. You can't deny that the Royal Family is entertaining and as Americans, we make a bigger deal about their engagements, weddings, babies, and coronations than the people who live in the same country as them.
After reading article after article about these two, I have come to the conclusion that they are perfect for each other. Meghan was married before and Prince Harry has had his string of girlfriends throughout his rebellious phase, but this lead them to find each other. While they may be the most famous couple in the world right now, they have made their relationship last despite the fame.
Here are a few reasons why Prince Harry's relationship with Meghan Markle lasted compared to his other girlfriends.
They kept their private lives private.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were confirmed as a couple sometime in November of 2016 by Kensington Palace. While they were probably dating long before the announcement, no one really had any idea if they were together because they did not flaunt their relationship to the public. Even after they were announced as a couple, they made very few appearances together and preferred eating in rather than going out. By keeping their dating life private, this prevented the media and anyone else from ruining the relationship.
They have common goals.
Prince Harry has made it known throughout the years that he tries to carry on his mother Princess Diana's passion for helping the less fortunate. He has served in the royal guard, been deployed to Afghanistan, donated to multiple charities, he visits Africa to help often, and even helped start the Invictus Games in Toronto for disabled people.
While Meghan's involvement with charities is not as well know as Prince Harry's involvement, she has expressed her excitement to work further with charities as a new royal. Together, I truly believe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will help strengthen the US and UK alliance, as well as full-hearted support charities they cherish together.
They laugh together.
Watching their BBC engagement segment, you could see they have a very similar sense of humor. Meghan looks at Prince Harry with such awe and love and he looks at her the same way. When they took their official engagement photos, Meghan held on to Harry and tried to make him laugh because she could tell he was nervous. You know what they say, "A couple who laughs together, stays together."
They both understand how to deal with fame.
A lot of celebrity relationships die because the couple realizes that the scheduling conflicts that come with fame are not easy. You can go a long time without seeing your significant other and that eventually takes its toll on the relationship.
With Prince Harry being in the UK and Meghan living in Canada during the beginning of their relationship, they know how to handle the distance. It is also helpful that Meghan is used to the paparazzi from being an actress, as many of Prince Harry's previous girlfriends stated they were not a fan of the constant media attention.
Having someone who understands the pros and cons of fame is really important to make a relationship go the distance.
They balance each other.
Prince Harry has always seemed more reserved and shy when attending political events compared to his older brother Prince William. Meghan, on the other hand, seems bold and confident. She handles herself with such grace and ease around the cameras and the media loves her for that.
I believe Harry will teach Meghan when she should keep things more private or when they need to be more reserved about issues, and Meghan will help Harry become more confident in public, especially in front of the camera.
They both value each other's past and families.
Every person has a story and, boy, do these two have an interesting past. Prince Harry lost his mother at a very young age and has admitted he still has issues coping with her death. His father, Prince Charles, then married the woman he had an affair with while married to his mother.
Prince Harry also has a well documented rebellious phase where he was constantly out partying and getting into trouble. Meghan is biracial and has stated that being biracial has caused some social issues throughout her life. Her father and mother divorced when she was young, she was a case model for "Deal or No Deal" to pay the bills, she's divorced, and her half-siblings have been throwing her under the bus ever since they caught word that she was dating a royal.
Despite all of this, they still love each other knowing about their pasts and their families.
I wish the newly engaged couple a lifetime of happiness and want to thank them for proving that fairytale endings still exist! I am looking forward to watching yet another royal wedding in May 2018!
