Most of us have had a high school sweetheart, that one guy or girl you were with the longest and never thought of life without them.

Nine times out of 10, that doesn't last and that's okay.

High school is a time for self-discovery and personal growth. We're still figuring out who we are now, but more so in high school. While I know some people are still with their high school sweethearts (I even know someone engaged to hers), here are X things we can learn from that relationship from being so young.

1. If you don't agree with something they do, do not be afraid to go against it.

What I mean by this is if your significant other does something you aren't comfortable with or just plain don't agree with, don't be afraid to speak your mind. Just because they are your significant other does not mean you have to blindly follow everything they say or do. This sounds like common sense, but sometimes it isn't so obvious to see when you're young and easily influenced. Sometimes you need someone to tell you, so here I am to tell you if something doesn't feel right to do, say no and stand your ground.

2. They taught you how to love.

Whether the relationship was good, bad or still going, that person was probably the first person who taught you how to love. If it was bad, they taught you what love doesn't feel like. No matter how bad it ended, this was probably the most important lesson they taught you.

3. They made your last 4 years of relative care-free life memorable.

High school is typically the last few years you don't have to stress too much about money, work or anything super adult-y. In that free time, you probably spent it with that high school sweetheart at movies, the park, a town fair. Even if they aren't in your life anymore, you can always remember those good times that helped you move forward to where you are today.

4. They taught you the importance of trust.

Another no-brainer, right? Not so much when you're in high school. When you actually have to experience it, that's when you truly realize how important it is. Being honest with one another is what makes it last, what makes it healthy, what makes a relationship enjoyable. This is probably the key lesson from a high school sweetheart.

5. Remembering that it's a friendship as well as a romantic relationship.

There's a fine balance between romantic and friendly. High school sweethearts remind us to keep the humor, quality time and excitement alive in a relationship and not turn it into strictly high-end dates we see on social media constantly.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
