If you told me five years ago that I would be dating a woman I would’ve called you crazy. Never once have I seriously entertained the idea of dating a woman in real life.

But then I met my girlfriend.

In my lifetime I've dated four men and one woman. As someone who has experienced dating both sexes, I can definitely say that my personal experience dating a woman is much easier and healthier than my past relationships with men.

Does this mean I'll never look at men again? Definitely not.

I just have a new found realization of how healthy a relationship should be. However, as you can imagine, dating a woman versus dating a man is completely different.

When you date a man you get to do cute things in public like kiss each other and hold hands like any normal couple does.

I never realized how much I took that for granted until I started dating a woman. My partner and I don't act like a couple in public. She doesn't like it because she's not big on PDA. However, I don't like publicly showing that we're dating because I'm afraid someone will walk up to us and say something.

If you ever wondered what it's like to be judged in public, walk down the street holding the hand of a woman and you'll find out.

It's upsetting that I have to walk around with the fear that someone will come up to us and do something just because we're two women in love.

Aside from this, dating a woman is, in my opinion, better than dating men.

Women are so much more emotional compared to men. I know that isn't a shocker to anyone, but personally, I think it's so refreshing. When I dated men I was giving a lot of emotion on my side and never really any emotion was reciprocated.

Women tend to be more open about their feelings, which I think leads to a healthier relationship. There's a lot more talking and deeper conversations in a woman/woman relationship. I feel like I've gotten to know my partner so much better in such a shorter amount of time compared to my relationships with men.

Women LOVE to talk, this isn't a secret to anyone.

Even though some people find this super annoying, I think it's such a vital aspect of a relationship, which was more dominant in my woman/woman relationship.

In my experience, when I was dating men, an argument would spring up out of nowhere, which would lead to screaming and both of us walking away from one another because we needed time to cool down.

Since I've been in a relationship with a woman, the way I argue has completely changed. If there is something wrong then we address it head on WITHOUT screaming. We talk things out, explain both of our sides and then come to a conclusion/solution for the issue.

Women love to talk things out, and frankly, I've discovered recently that I used to fight a lot more with the men I've dated versus my current partner. I've also noticed that women are more open to their partner's opinions, whereas most of the time, men refuse to listen.

Because women love to talk, they're so much easier to connect with.

I've found that my woman/woman relationship has a very strong emotional connection compared to the men I've dated. Women can agree on more topics and have a lot of the same interests compared to men.

This leads to a relationship where the emotional connection is so much deeper than the physical connection, which I believe leads to a longer-lasting relationship, not to mention a healthier one.

This doesn't apply to the whole of the female population, but women tend to know what they want.

Women are go-getters and they mature faster than men. Men tend to not know what they want, especially in college. Because men don't know what they want, their favorite pass time activity is mind games. Women tend to be more straightforward and direct, which leaves out all the bullshit mind games.

I've found that my mental stability in a male/female relationship was all over the place compared to a woman/woman relationship. Having to always try and figure out what your partner wants is just draining.

No one has time for that.

Going back to my point about women being more mature than men, this theory can be applied to more than one aspect of life.

When I was in a male/female relationship, men would CONSTANTLY shame me whenever I got my period.

Since I wasn't able to have sex for one week out of the month, I was the center of blame and disappointment of the relationship. The men I've dated were very passive aggressive when I was on my period because that meant they could not have sex (God forbid).

Since being in a relationship with a woman, dealing with periods has become much smoother sailing. If I happen to get my period one day, there is no animosity about it because she gets it. If I'm ever being overly mean and irrational, my partner just automatically knows I'm on my period and she just lets it slide.

Is being on your period an excuse for being a bitch? No, but I've found that women are much more understanding of it than men.

The best part about being in a woman/woman relationship is the sex. No question.

Compared to sex with men, it is BY FAR the best part of dating a woman. When I was dating men, the sex was very selfish on their part. It was over as soon as they were done, and there was little to no emotional aspect of it.

Sex with a woman is the complete opposite.

It's more passionate and both partners make sure the other is satisfied. There's both giving and receiving when you're in bed with another woman. When I dated men, it was almost as if engaging in sex was solely for the purpose of pleasing them.

I never thought sex could be an experience for both partners until I started dating a woman.

With all of this being said, am I trying to convince everyone that all women should be lesbians? Definitely not. I'm just trying to crush the stigma of woman/woman relationships being filled with drama and 24/7 arguments because "women are crazy." Yes, some women are crazy, but not all of us.

So, if you're a woman thinking about dating another woman, I say go for it. Why not?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
